Occupational therapists support people whose ability to function is limited due to illness, injury, or disability, and who engage in meaningful activities. Based on a doctor’s order, they independently treat clients with various impairments (e.g., in motor skills, the sensory organs, or with intellectual and psychological limitations). Occupational therapists work closely with family members as well as with doctors and within an interdisciplinary team. They support the occupational therapy and rehabilitative care of patients.
Applicable legal regulations, occupational safety, and ergonomics are integral components of their professional practice. Professional ethics constitute another fundamental pillar of their work.
The training program imparts the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary for independent and autonomous occupational therapy practice.
The focus is not on the impairments themselves, but always on their impact on a person’s ability to act and participate in social life. Thus, occupational therapists support clients in developing strategies for coping with daily life and in adapting to environmental conditions.
