The modern job requirements are reflected in the diversity of vocational training pathways. The first step after graduating from Hauptschule or Realschule is the Basic Vocational Training Year (BGJ).

The BGJ is a 1-year full-time program. The training corresponds to the introductory level of apprenticeship programs—that is, generally the first year of training in a trade.

The Basic Vocational Training Year is offered in various occupational fields 

Through internships at training companies, you’ll gain insight into the realities of everyday professional life, and the company will get to know you better. This increases your chances of being hired for an apprenticeship. 

Upon successful completion of the BGJ, the training company can count this time toward your program, and you can start your apprenticeship with the second year of training or shorten your apprenticeship by 6 months.
