Occupational therapists support people who, due to an illness, injury, or disability, have limitations in their ability to function and focus on the activities of daily living that are meaningful to the individuals concerned. Based on a physician’s order, they independently treat clients with various impairments (e.g., in motor function, the sensory organs, or cognitive and psychological limitations). Occupational therapists work closely with family members, as well as with physicians and within interdisciplinary teams. They support the occupational therapy and rehabilitation care of patients.
Applicable legal regulations, occupational safety, and ergonomics are integral components of their professional practice. Professional ethics constitute another fundamental pillar guiding their actions.
The training program imparts the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary for independent and self-directed occupational therapy practice.
The focus is not on the impairments themselves, but always on their impact on a person’s ability to function and participate in social life. Thus, occupational therapists support clients in developing strategies for coping with daily life and in adapting to their environmental circumstances.
